Fife Flyers 2025-26 Season Preview

A New Era in Kirkcaldy: Flyers Rebuild from the Ground Up

Following one of the most difficult seasons in franchise history, the Fife Flyers are entering the 2025–26 EIHL campaign with a renewed sense of direction, identity, and purpose. Last year’s five-win season forced a complete organizational reset and now, with fresh ownership, new leadership, and a revamped roster, the Flyers are focused on re-establishing themselves as a serious competitor.

The offseason ushered in the end of an era as long-time owners Tom Muir and Jack Wishart stepped aside, making way for a North American-led ownership group. At the helm is former NHL draftee and Cardiff Devils forward Max Birbraer, who takes over as President and General Manager. Day-to-day operations now fall under seasoned executive Gareth Chalmers as Chief Operating Officer, while the bench is now led by Jamie Russell who also serves as Associate GM.

It’s a bold new chapter for the Flyers, one rooted in long-term development, defensive structure, and cultural transformation.

Roster Breakdown & New Signings

With major turnover following the 2024–25 campaign, the Flyers have undergone a full-scale rebuild. The new leadership has prioritized two-way play, accountability, and leadership all of which were glaring weaknesses during last year’s struggles.

A mix of returning veterans, promising imports, and homegrown talent now form the core of this rebuilt squad. And while a couple signings are still expected, the direction is clear: this is a team being built for the long haul and a team that won’t lay down this season. Personally, whilst writing this it’s an absolute joy to see that the ‘Auld Barn’ faithful will most definitely have a team they can be proud of this season.

Goaltending: The Foundation Returns

Shane Owen returns between the pipes, bringing EIHL-proven experience and a stabilizing presence. In a season of transition, Owen’s leadership and familiarity with the league are invaluable.

Joining him is Christian Purboo, a first-year pro out of Canadian U Sports. Purboo brings size, athleticism, and untapped potential. He’s expected to push Owen and contribute throughout the season. A younger British goaltender may also be added to share the load and further develop within the system.

Young local netminder Cameron Kenny joins to provide an option on the bench and give the Flyers the option of not using both imports on the bench. As well as Ben Keddie who’s on a 2 way.

Defence: A Complete Overhaul

Last season’s league-worst defensive record prompted an aggressive rebuild on the blue line. This year’s defensive group is younger, quicker, and far more mobile:

Returning:

  • Brodie Kay – the young Brit gives additional Brit depth to the Flyers.

New Signings:

  • Ryan Nicholson joins from Finland’s Mestis league. A dynamic skater with a strong hockey IQ, he’s expected to log heavy minutes and contribute in all situations.
  • Andrew McLean returns to the EIHL after time in North America, offering poise, puck movement, and experience.
  • Jonas Emmerdahl provides a calm, steady presence and familiarity with the European game.
  • Jeremy Masella, is an imposing strong physical stay at home d-man.
  • Ethan Hadden, just 18, is a promising local prospect and part of a new Britpack aiming to grow with the club.
  • Ian Scheid – Expected to bring offensive prowess and leadership to Fife’s blue line and power-play.

Young Brit pack of Cole Giannandrea, Kian Shevlin and Cameron Wilkie are all on 2-way contracts.

Forwards: New Faces, Fresh Identity

With no returning forwards confirmed, the focus so far is entirely on new signings. The group assembled so far brings a mix of size, physicality, and scoring potential — along with a clear focus on improving competitiveness and character.

New imports:

  • Vlastimil Dostálek: headlines the group with his size, well-rounded offensive game, and experience across Europe.
  • Didrik Nøkleby Svendsen: brings an edge to the lineup — physical, relentless on the forecheck, and tough in the corners.
  • Ethan Somoza: arrives with a track record of goal scoring (15+ goals in each of his last three seasons) and will likely slot into a top-six role.
  • Garet Hunt: an EIHL fan base’s dream signing, brings leadership, toughness, and an old-school edge that should energize the Auld Barn.
  • Keaton Jameson: formerly with Glasgow Clan, adds solid two-way presence and adaptability.
  • Josh Winquist: A reliable offensive talent who has transitioned seamlessly across leagues and continents. From dominating juniors to delivering strong performances in both North America and Europe, he’s proven himself an adaptable and leading forward. Now, at Fife Flyers, he’s expected to be a pivotal offensive contributor.
  • Justin Ducharme: A talented Canadian winger versatile, quick, and offensively effective. After a strong junior career and solid performance in both AHL and ECHL, he spent the latest season split between Slovakia and ECHL’s Trois-Rivières Lions. Now, joining Fife, he brings scoring ability, huge forward pedigree to the EIHL for 2025–26
  • Johan Porsberger: Veteran 32 year old Swedish forward that has proven consistency will provide primary and depth scoring to the Flyers. Had 154 points in 187 games during 4 year stint playing DEL2 at Dresdener Eislowen.

British additions:

  • Mason Alderson, Ben Brown, Richard Hartmann Jr, Aiden Wilson and Rowan Mills to form a developing Britpack. This group will be crucial for long-term stability and depth.

A couple more are expected to join before the season begins, potentially adding scoring punch and playmaking ability.

EIHL Dream Team – One to Watch: Didrik Nøkleby Svendsen

He may not be the flashiest signing, but Svendsen is built for the EIHL physical, tenacious, and a nightmare to play against along the boards. If he sets the tone early and brings consistent energy, he could become a key part of the Flyers’ identity shift. Expect him to be a fan favourite in the Auld Barn.

Season Outlook: Grit Over Glamour

The 2025–26 campaign isn’t about silverware it’s about setting standards. Fife may not leap into playoff contention just yet, but they won’t be an easy two points for opponents either. Structure, character, and culture are being built from the ground up.

If the remaining forward signings deliver and the defense holds firm, the Flyers could become a tough out on any night. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.
